18th Aug 2015 -- Development of the second professional model in the range has reached the completion of the first 3 D printed prototype,hence the scanning lines across. The stainless steel handles will allow for a lifetime of use, currently the attached 3mm thick blades are off the general propose model, work is now underway to trail two different types of steel, - 2.3 mm M3 high speed and - 2.3mm thick M390PM which is a stainless steel produced by powder metallurgy, M390PM is very similar in composition to another high performance steel called ELMAX , M390PM has shown to be slightly more durable that and that it also because it came in 2.3 sheets is why i wanted to trail it. The manufacturer Boler indicated that these types of tool steels should preform better than there D2 steel that i shore 80 merinos without sharpening during the prototyping of the general propose shears.
Further refinement of this professional model is been carried by model maker Colin Quartly of Christchurch, the aim is to reduce about 300grams of weight from the whole unit
16/09/2015 update- modification of the above stainless shears has seen about a 20% reduction in this plastic sample, a mould will be made from it this week.
6/01/2018, because of weight the stainless steel prototypes were abandoned and the use of 3D printing was looked at. After redesigning and printing two prototypes prototypes number 3 is hoped that testing will begin early February 2018, at 550 grams it half the weight of the stainless steel shears, fitted with a grade of knife steel that's hoped will form well
Printing the handles where by both blades were parallel to each other proved to be a lot trickier then was thought and another 5 prototypes where made since Feb, also an adjustable mechanism was designed and added to the bottom handle, this has proven to be successful. 30 sheep have been shorn with the model shown below but a small amount of flapping is happening so another bottom handle is being printed with a 1/2 m wider gap.
